A Simple Analysis of Texture-Induced Friction Reduction Based on Surface Roughness Ratio

چکیده
The effect of surface texture on friction reduction under fluid lubrication has been broadly acknowledged in the tribology community. However, lack understanding underlying mechanisms remains a challenge for advancement textured enhanced lubrication. Numerous models have proposed, but they are almost all based hydrodynamic alone and proven complex, system limited unreflective beneficial secondary provided by residual lubricants within texture. This paper presents simple analysis induced actual liquid–solid interface area hypothesis. A model roughness ratio (the between projected solid area) was proposed which (1) is quantitative, straightforward, intuitive sensitive to shape fraction; (2) directly reflects literature; (3) general data trend collected literature data. By focusing variations key parameters, combined with sampling independent studies demonstrated that increased pit depth-to-diameter (d/D) most significant 0.01 0.2; further increase d/D only marginally affects coefficient; texture’s fraction plays much weaker role than depth/diameter reduction. may prove useful gaining more insights into texture-enhanced providing tool quantitatively studying mechanism often cited literature.

Effect of surface roughness on steel-steel dry friction coefficient
The influence of surface roughness magnitude and direction on dry static friction coefficient between two similar steel samples has been studied through an experiment. A testing apparatus has been designed and fabricated to measure the friction coefficient for a few forms of surface asperity. According to the results of the experiments, dry friction coefficient is affected by both magnitude and...

Persson's multiscale contact mechanics theory combined with a multiscale Brillouin-Prandtl-Tomlinson model is used to show that on the basis of these models "dry friction" [i.e., kinetic friction that remains at exceedingly small velocities (but still above the creep range) close to its value at higher velocities] should almost always occur for self-affine surfaces when the dominant interaction...

متن کاملInfluence of machining parameters on surface roughness and dry friction
Article history: Received 6 October, 2015 Accepted 7 March 2016 Available online 8 March 2016 Dry friction depends on the surface topography which, in turn, is governed by machining parameters in addition to several other factors,. Therefore, in order to establish a qualitative relationship among these factors, the surface roughness and coefficient of static friction are measured for specimens ...
